Words You Can Come Across in Your Blues Guitar Lesson by Rama Singh
Learning to play blues guitar can be lots of fun or it can be a real pain. Usually when you are progressing fast it is fun. When the progress is not coming, the process becomes more and more difficult. The most significant thing in Learning The Guitar is actually practicing on regular basis. Yet, there is one more important ingredient, which can accelerate your learning – it is getting to know the basic terms that you will come across in most blues guitar lesson courses.
I am pretty sure that mostly everybody is familiar with what notes are; yet it is my firm belief that all learning starts from the basics and when we understand the basics, it is much easier for us to move forward with our learning onto more complicated concepts. The term “note” has double meaning. One refers to a bit of sound and the second to a pitch (how high or low the particular sound is). Notes could be either played individually or in groups. When someone says that he/she plays a “lick”, he/she wants to say that one single note is played (to be precise a sequence of single notes).
When a combination of three or more notes is played together, we speak about playing “chords”. Chords could be graphically represented in a drawing, which we call “chord diagrams”. Those are very helpful especially for the beginners, as by simply looking at them you can learn how to play different chords even without a teacher or some online course. When more chords are played one after the other, we talk about “chord progression”. Once this chord progression is repeated more than once, we can call it a “riff” and if repeated several times, we call it a “refrain”.
In order to produce some sound from your guitar you have to use the other hand as well. So, one hand is fretting while the other one is “strumming.” Strumming refers to stroking up or downward the strings at the bridge end of the guitar. To be sure that you are producing the proper sound, make sure that your guitar is “tuned” before you start playing. In order for your guitar to be tuned, each of your strings have to resonate at a given frequency, producing a specific sound. If you do not have perfect musical ear, you can tune your guitar with a guitar tuner.
No one becomes a proficient player in a few hours or even weeks. As everything else, it takes time and regular practice to master blues guitar. The important thing to understand is that although it is great and helpful to know the theory and the lingo, without practice there is no way to advance and see the results you dream of. It can only be achieved if the blues guitar lesson becomes an integral part of your everyday life.
Chord progression could be noted into a “guitar tablature” (guitar tab), which is an easy-to-follow diagram of finger positions on the “fret board,” allowing a guitarist to play a song without understanding how to read the notes. Fret board is another name for the section of the guitar neck that has divided fields called frets. “Fretting” refers to pressing and holding the strings of your guitar down on the fret board. Fretting could be done either by your left or right hand depending on whether you are left or right-handed.
